She Waits for the Rain
Becky lives in a third-floor apartment
At the corner of Ellis and Rose
And she lives all alone, though she’s
never alone
In the company of Sherlock Holmes
But he just stares up at her and begs
And she has drunk her loneliness to the dregs
She cries out loud now and again
And she waits for the rain
She says, “Now, love isn’t for me,
I’m tied to the tracks
‘Cause I gave my heart away,
and I never got it back”
The night before he hit the road
She said, “I love you,” he said, “I know”
She cries out loud now and again
And she waits for the rain
So she spends the afternoons
Pacing the avenue
And she wonders in the deafening silence
If others hear it too
It could be the voice of the Divine, but it’s
gone before she can trace the line
She cries out loud now and again
And she waits for the rain, the rain…

The Memory of You
Day is done, my work clothes off
The clock is broken in the other room
It’s funny a week could come and go
Without a single thought of you
This place is empty as a box
Got a picture of you still hanging around—
Hanging over me like an albatross
But I can’t find the strength to take it down
And the flowers are frozen on the first day of April
The clown on t.v. grins and says “April Fools”
Yeah, but the ground is still frozen, and the joke
leaves me hanging
As the wind whips around this room
Like the memory of you…
I wore this tattoo under my skin
You never knew what it meant
(But) like every secret I’ve ever kept, it
Came to the surface in the end
And the flowers are frozen on the first day of April
The clown on t.v. grins and says “April Fools”
Yeah, but the ground is still frozen, and the joke
leaves me hanging
As the wind whips around this room
Like the memory of you…
And I’m here beneath a patched-up sky
I saw you but I passed you by
And it wasn’t even a decision, I was just
On the other side of the road
And the flowers are frozen on the first day of April
The clown on t.v. grins and says “April Fools”
Yeah, but the ground is still frozen, and the joke
leaves me hanging
As the wind whips around this room
Like the memory of you…

Watching the Trains
Here comes the summer
Rolls in like tumbleweed
And fills my head
With fireflies and allergies
I watch every train as it
Carries its burden in front
of me
My heart beats out a song of pain
As I stare down at a stone plate in
the dirt
But the trains don’t stop coming
And the rains keep on watering
the earth
Here comes November
A hundred colors falling down
And the weathervane is busier than
Chinatown
I follow my mind, not too far,
To a time when you were
still around
My heart beats out a song of pain
As I stare down at a stone plate in
the dirt
But the trains don’t stop coming
And the rains keep on watering
the earth
Here comes the empty
My tears roll down the window frame
And Nothing is the only thing
That I can claim
My heart beats out a song of pain
As I stare down at a stone plate in
the dirt
But the trains don’t stop coming
And the rains keep on watering
the earth

Right Here
Hush, you said
Don’t let a word slip from you
They’re too expensive, and you can’t
Say what you mean
The burden’s on you
I’ve got to hear when your heart speaks
Show me, don’t tell me, what wonders
You have seen
Give me your hand
We’ll walk away
From shallow words, and deeper,
Deeper lies
Come run with me
The hills are rolling in laughter
Don’t be afraid
‘Cause I’m right here by your side
A dusty moon
Showed its face between the trees
And I rattled on like a song, but
Your smile was steady and calm
Remember me
Whenever silence defeats the struggle
Let yourself listen to the meekest
Of beautiful things
Give me your hand
We’ll walk away
From shallow words, and deeper,
Deeper lies
Come run with me
The hills are rolling in laughter
Don’t be afraid
‘Cause I’m right here by your side

Look Where I Landed
She knocked me over like a gravestone
You could hear the crash from your window
She whistled as she strolled away
Same nonchalant, now she’s a self-appointed
widow
She’s haphazard, half insane
She’ll forget your face, forget your name
Thought I could handle her
single-handed
Now look where I landed
It was no different at the dawn of time
She asked my name at the five and dime
And in fifteen hours I had a better half,
A worse half, she blinded me to the
crime
She’s haphazard, half insane
She’ll forget your face, forget your name
Thought I could handle her
single-handed
Now look where I landed
Last time I told her I loved her
She was on her way out the door
Bag slung over her shoulder
And all the furniture on the floor
But her suitcase was half-packed
The whole time she was here
She was just waiting for the right moment
to escape
She’s haphazard, half insane
She’ll forget your face, forget your name
Thought I could handle her
single-handed
Now look where I landed

Where Were You?
We’ve seen the chase
It’s finally safe to say that
He is lost
Where were you
When he got his signals crossed?
He knew a god of love
But now he’s having second thoughts
Where were you
When he asked what that love
Might cost?
Where were you
When his faith broke down,
And this child couldn’t smile
‘cause his eyes had met
Heaven’s frown?
You threw your impression of God
At him
Like it was you who wore the crown
And now this boy has drown
And where were you?
He quit his job
Says he would die before he went
Back to that place
Where were you
When his heart was on display
Where were you
When his faith broke down,
And this child couldn’t smile
‘cause his eyes had met
Heaven’s frown?
You threw your impression of God
At him
Like it was you who wore the crown
And now this boy has drown
And where were you?

The Patience for Dreams
You say it’s better to wish the impossible
than to not know what you want
You look at me like I’m crazy
‘cause I’m fine with what I got
But I can’t stand the confusion
when my faith backfires on me
And I don’t have the patience
for dreams
Do you remember the place where I told you
that we’d get married and run away
Beneath the ancient swing set
your laugh was the light of day
And I believed it would happen—
I guess that’s just the sort of thing
That makes me lose my patience
for dreams
So now we are together
But your mind’s on someone else
Tomorrow when I wake up
Will I have forgotten what I once felt?
I will climb up to the attic
And turn the well-worn key
And try to find the patience for dreams
I will try to find the patience for dreams

Sinking Stone
The stone was on its way down
Before I knew the how or why
No amount of wishing
Could stop it in time
And I cried out
‘Cause I knew it was wrong
But the forces at hand, they
were much too strong
And a stone sinks fast
Right through your hands
And it makes little difference
Wherever it lands
It’s gonna be a hard fall
So holding a finger to the wind
Was the best that I could do
Try to judge where the stone’ll be
In a second or two
But in the end
It wasn’t my stone to save
I couldn’t give it
What the ground gave
And a stone sinks fast
Right through your hands
And it makes little difference
Wherever it lands
It’s gonna be a hard fall

Since You Took My Hand
Turn my head to the eastern light
Throw my shoulder against the night
Tell someone I feel alright
Trade my airplane for a kite
Since you took my hand
Rain come down, big old spill
Muddy river’s had its fill
And everyone’s saying it’s overkill
But the swollen sky has lost its will
Since you took my hand
I wish that things could stay the way they are
And we could put ‘em in a big glass case
But love wasn’t made for museums
And we were not made to stand in place...
Ain’t no river, ain’t no wind
Can take me to your love’s end
If the seas are stormy, toss me in
Calm the waters, come on in
Come on and take my hand
